Overview
Delta SkyMiles is one of the biggest frequent-flyer programs, with more than 120 million members. Membership is free and miles do not expire. TPG valued SkyMiles at about 1.25 cents each (February 2026).
How to earn SkyMiles
– Flying: Miles on Delta-marketed tickets are earned based on revenue. General members receive roughly 5 miles per dollar on base fare; Silver 7/mile; Gold 8/mile; Platinum 9/mile; Diamond 11/mile. Basic economy often earns little or no mileage. Partner-marketed flights (booked through another carrier) typically earn as a percentage of distance flown; accrual varies by partner, fare class and elite status.
– Delta-branded credit cards: Delta American Express cards earn SkyMiles and add travel perks such as a free checked bag, priority boarding, inflight discounts and award discounts. Current welcome-offer structures include examples like: Gold card offers up to 90,000 bonus miles with a first-year $0 then $150 fee; Platinum up to 100,000 bonus miles with a $350 annual fee; Reserve up to 125,000 bonus miles with a $650 annual fee. Business versions exist and some Delta cards can help toward Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) requirements via spend or provide MQD head-starts (terms apply).
– Shopping and dining portals: Earn extra miles through Delta SkyMiles Shopping and Delta SkyMiles Dining with participating retailers and restaurants.
– Transfers: American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Delta at a 1:1 ratio. Transfers can involve an excise-tax offset fee in some cases; decide based on planned redemptions.
– Promotions and partners: Additional miles can be earned through Delta Vacations, car and hotel partners, ground-transport partners and targeted promotions.
SkyMiles partners
– SkyTeam alliance: Delta partners with SkyTeam members including Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, Aeromexico, China Eastern, China Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Saudia, Kenya Airways, Air Europa, SAS, Aerolineas Argentinas and others. You can usually earn and redeem SkyMiles on these carriers according to each partnership’s rules.
– Non-alliance partners: Delta also works with carriers like AirBaltic, Cape Air, El Al, LATAM and WestJet plus various regional operators. Each partner has its own earning and redemption rules.
Medallion elite status
Delta’s public Medallion tiers are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Qualification is primarily via Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), which are earned from Delta/partner flight spend and some Delta card spending.
Tier highlights
– Silver: Complimentary domestic/short-haul first-class upgrades starting roughly 24 hours before departure (when available), Comfort+ upgrades within 24 hours, priority boarding (typically Zone 5), one free checked bag and free checked bags for companions on Delta flights.
– Gold: Earlier upgrade window (about three days before departure), SkyPriority benefits, same-day confirmed changes without extra fees and Comfort+ upgrades from three days out.
– Platinum: Upgrade priority starting around five days before departure for domestic/short-haul first class, Comfort+ at booking and an annual Choice Benefit (selectable perk).
– Diamond: Highest upgrade priority, expanded Choice Benefit options, offers such as Clear Plus membership opportunities and top-tier privileges.
How to earn MQDs
MQDs are generally earned on a dollar-for-dollar basis for Delta-marketed flights and eligible Delta Vacations purchases. Some Delta American Express cards award MQDs based on annual card spending tiers (for example, certain Reserve and Platinum products may provide MQDs per set amount of spend) and some provide yearly MQD Headstart credits for cardholders under specified terms.
Credit card perks (high level)
Delta cobranded cards deliver practical perks for frequent Delta flyers, including:
– First checked bag free and priority boarding on Delta flights.
– 20% discount on onboard purchases.
– A 15% discount on award redemptions for Delta-operated flights with eligible cards.
– Higher-tier cards (Platinum/Reserve) add benefits like companion certificates, statement credits for TSA PreCheck/Global Entry, dining or ride services, and limited Delta Sky Club access (Reserve cards commonly offer a number of Sky Club visits and Centurion Lounge access when flying Delta and paying with the card).
Redeeming SkyMiles
– Dynamic pricing: Delta uses dynamic award pricing, so award costs vary by route, date, cabin and demand. Use delta.com or the app’s flexible-date calendar to compare prices.
– Refunds and redeposits: Delta award tickets originating in the U.S. and Canada (excluding basic economy) are refundable — miles can be redeposited and taxes/fees returned, which can be helpful if award prices drop after booking.
– Partner awards: You can book partner flights with SkyMiles, but partner award pricing increasingly follows Delta’s dynamic pricing, reducing some previous arbitrage opportunities.
– Card discounts: Some Delta cards offer a 15% discount on Delta-operated award redemptions.
Sweet spots and strategies
– Flash sales: Watch for periodic Delta award flash sales that offer steep discounts on select routes in main cabin, Comfort+ and premium cabins.
– South America/LATAM routes: Redemptions to South America on partners like LATAM have historically offered strong value on some routes, especially nonstop options between the U.S. and Brazil.
– Short domestic flights: With dynamic pricing, short off-peak domestic awards can be inexpensive, particularly when combined with card-based award discounts.
Practical tips
– Be flexible with dates and use the flexible-calendar view to find the lowest award prices.
– If you’re chasing Medallion status, factor in MQD-earning opportunities from flights and eligible card spending.
– Transferring Amex points to Delta is convenient but isn’t always the best value; compare the cost in points to paid fares and other transfer options.
– Use shopping and dining portals to earn extra miles on routine purchases.
Bottom line
Delta SkyMiles is a large, widely partnered program useful for both domestic and international travel. Dynamic award pricing and evolving elite rules make consistent sweet spots less predictable, but combining Delta flights and SkyTeam partners with cobranded cards, shopping/dining portals and promotional sales can build a useful balance of miles for future travel.
