Taco Bell's Loyalty Program Aids Recovery from Cyclospora Outbreak

Taco Bell has bounced back from a recent Cyclospora outbreak, with its loyalty program playing a pivotal role in the recovery, according to Chris Turner, CEO of Yum Brands. During a Q3 earnings call for 2026, Turner highlighted how loyalty members returned to the restaurant twice as quickly as non-members in the aftermath of this challenge.

Rapid Growth in Loyalty Membership

Turner reported impressive growth in Taco Bell's loyalty program, which saw a remarkable 25% increase in memberships year-over-year, particularly strong in the U.S. market. Yum Brands, which also oversees KFC and Habit Burger & Grill, emphasized the importance of this rising loyalty membership as part of Taco Bell's broader strategy.

Loyalty as a Core Strategy

The emphasis on loyalty is integral to Taco Bell's business objectives, especially when aiming to attract future consumers who value personalized and seamless dining experiences. Turner stated, "Loyalty is central to our raise the bar priority of battling for future consumers who seek more personalized, relevant, and seamless experiences." This approach not only fosters stronger connections with customers but also promises lasting benefits.

Strategies for Re-engagement

Central to Taco Bell's recovery efforts was the introduction of their Tuesday Drops promotion, which provides exclusive deals through their loyalty app every Tuesday. Turner noted that this initiative successfully attracted customers back, contributing to a faster growth of loyalty memberships during a challenging period.

Despite these positive developments, Taco Bell still faced some setbacks. The brand reported a 4% decline in global same-restaurant sales on a year-over-year basis, with total systemwide sales dropping to $4.3 billion—a 2% decrease from the previous year.

Innovations for Improved Customer Experience

One of Taco Bell’s bright spots during this period has been the implementation of a voice AI system in drive-thrus, which has been rolled out to 900 locations over the past two years. This technology has reportedly led to a 6% increase in drive-thru satisfaction along with a 1.5% boost in sales. These improvements are attributed to higher average ticket sizes and better retention rates among staff.

Looking ahead, Taco Bell plans to enhance its voice AI capabilities, aiming to deploy the system to more than 1,500 locations by year's end. Future features are anticipated, focusing on loyalty program integrations, multi-language support, and enhancing the coordination between AI and human staff in the restaurant setting. "Our team is already thinking about how to blend loyalty features with AI-driven solutions to create a more compelling experience for our customers over time," said Ranjith Roy, Yum Brands CFO.
