SEA Spot Saver to End After Thanksgiving: What You Need to Know

Travelers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will lose the SEA Spot Saver service on Nov. 30. Here’s what you should know before it goes away.

Travelers passing through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) will soon need to adapt, as the popular SEA Spot Saver program will come to an end. This free service allowed passengers to reserve a place in line for TSA security screening, but it will officially terminate on November 30, shortly after the busy Thanksgiving travel period.

End of an Era

Those traveling before November 30 can still take advantage of SEA Spot Saver, marking the final few days to utilize this service. The decision to discontinue the program comes from significant improvements in security checkpoint management that have led to reduced wait times.

According to the Port of Seattle, recent enhancements have made ordinary security lines quicker and more efficient, prompting travelers to opt for the standard lanes over reserved appointments.

Improved Security Measures

Introduced in 2021, SEA Spot Saver was a groundbreaking solution for one of the busiest airports in the United States, allowing travelers to seamlessly reserve a screening slot without the need for a paid membership or expedited program.

The service gained rapid popularity, with the Port of Seattle celebrating its one-millionth user just last year in June 2023. However, increased capacity from renovations, including a revamped Checkpoint 1 and new Checkpoint 6, has transformed the airport experience.

These updates were part of the UpgradeSEA initiative and have made it possible for over 94% of passengers to clear security in less than 20 minutes.

Transitioning After November 30

Passengers still wishing to use SEA Spot Saver can do so daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. until the 30th at TSA Checkpoint 4. Reservations can be made up to five days ahead of departure, free of charge, and are designed for general security screening.

All appointments made before November 30 will be honored, but once this date passes, other security options will be available, including TSA PreCheck and CLEAR for eligible travelers.

Additionally, travelers can keep track of current wait times through the airport’s security information page, the free flySEA app, or digital displays located throughout the terminal.

Legacy of SEA Spot Saver

Despite its end, SEA Spot Saver's impact will continue to resonate. Following Seattle's lead, several other airports across the U.S. have adopted similar reservation systems inspired by this pioneer program.

Travelers looking to utilize SEA Spot Saver during the busy Thanksgiving week should mark their calendars, as this is one of the last opportunities to secure a free reservation before the program concludes.
