Malaysia Airlines Alerts Customers About Data Breach Linked to Amadeus

Malaysia Airlines has issued a caution regarding a data breach impacting customer information via Amadeus's reservation systems.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Airlines has issued a warning to its customers regarding a cybersecurity breach that may have compromised customer data handled by Amadeus, its reservation technology provider. This incident potentially impacts information processed from August 2023 to September 2026.

Importantly, the airline confirmed that its own IT systems remain secure, and there is no current evidence suggesting that financial details have been accessed. The airline is actively working with Amadeus and other relevant parties to investigate the matter further.

Scope of the Data Breach

This breach is not an isolated issue for Malaysia Airlines. Several other carriers have reported similar exposures due to the same technology provider. Reports have surfaced of Cathay Pacific identifying around 53,000 affected bookings, and Asiana Airlines is also linked to the incident.

In conjunction with this, Amadeus has confirmed the discovery of a vulnerability within its travel booking display environment, which is thought to be the root cause of the data exposure.

Details of Potentially Affected Customer Information

Japan Airlines and Japan Transocean Air have provided information indicating that approximately 92,000 of their customers were affected. Among this group, about 90,000 experienced exposure of their reservation codes, names, flight dates, sectors, and travel classes. Additionally, around 2,000 individuals had more sensitive information, including contact details, passport numbers, and frequent flyer numbers compromised.

While Malaysia Airlines has acknowledged the breach, it has yet to specify which data fields or the exact number of customers impacted. Given the varying figures reported by Cathay and Japanese airlines, it's challenging to gauge a definitive industry-wide impact.

Precautions and Phishing Concerns

In light of the incident, Malaysia Airlines has encouraged customers to remain vigilant for any unsolicited communications that may seek personal or financial information. Similarly, Japan Airlines has cautioned its customers about possible phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls, and deceptive websites impersonating its brand. They also reassured customers that flight operations have remained unaffected.

The Bigger Picture: Understanding the Amadeus Incident

This situation highlights the significance of understanding the context of a data breach. Malaysia Airlines emphasized that while its internal systems are intact, the third-party supplier’s data handling has been put into question. To fully grasp the impact of this incident, it is essential to analyze the compromised environment and determine which customer records were accessible.

Amadeus's mention of a display environment does not guarantee that its entire reservation system has been breached. Furthermore, Malaysia Airlines’ timeframe of affected processing does not clarify the duration of potential unauthorized access.

Critical questions remain unanswered, such as which specific component of the system was vulnerable, how access permissions were managed, and whether other clients sharing the same environment may also be at risk. Malaysia Airlines has committed to providing additional updates as their investigation progresses.
