Enhancing the Passenger Experience
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi is taking steps to simplify security clearance procedures for transfer passengers, particularly those connecting from domestic to international flights. This initiative aims to improve the overall travel experience at one of Asia's busiest airports.
Focus on Transfer Traffic
Transfer passengers constitute a significant portion of IGI's annual traffic, accounting for 30 to 35 percent of the total. S G K Kishore, the Executive Director of GMR Airports, announced on November 3 that discussions have begun with security authorities to enhance the connection processes.
The emphasis is on both domestic-to-international and domestic-to-domestic flights, as these routes are crucial for maintaining passenger flow. Streamlining these security measures is essential for the airport's competitiveness in the regional aviation market.
Responding to Security Challenges
This push for improved security procedures comes on the heels of heightened measures introduced in September 2026. These were prompted by an incident where three foreign nationals managed to avoid required immigration checks, highlighting vulnerabilities in the transfer process.
In response, airport authorities established 24x7 nodal teams to manually escort international transfer passengers and enhance digital and physical security verifications throughout the transfer corridors. These steps aim to ensure that safety remains a top priority while also facilitating smoother operations.
Preparing for Growth
The airport's efforts coincide with its anticipation of welcoming around 82 million passengers during the current fiscal year, a notable increase from the previous year's 78.7 million. With such a substantial volume of travelers relying on IGI, improvements in transit procedures can significantly elevate the airport's status as a regional hub.
Moreover, the airport operator is in the midst of expanding its infrastructure, aiming to boost its handling capacity from 106 million to 125 million passengers annually. This growth not only meets the rising passenger demand but also supports more efficient travel experiences.
Regulatory Approvals Required
While the proposed changes aim to enhance the efficiency of security procedures, they must receive approval from India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. This governing body oversees all civil aviation security standards nationwide, ensuring that any modifications comply with safety regulations.
With ongoing consultations between IGI and regulatory bodies, travelers can look forward to a potentially smoother journey through one of the country’s key airports. As these discussions progress, further announcements are expected regarding the specifics of the security process modifications.
