Clear+ Introduces E-Gates to Accelerate Airport Security Checks

Clear+ is set to enhance the airport security experience with its new e-gate program, allowing faster passage for travelers.

Clear+, known for its biometric identity-verification process, is revolutionizing how travelers experience airport security. On November 4, the company announced plans to roll out its e-gate program to the majority of airports offering Clear+ by the year's end.

How Clear+ Works

Currently, Clear+ operates in 63 airports nationwide, with Tampa International Airport being its latest addition. The service allows travelers to skip the conventional ID check line by utilizing facial recognition technology.

Before the introduction of e-gates, passengers would need to verify their identity at a Clear kiosk, followed by meeting a Clear agent who would guide them to a TSA officer for final verification. This system, while effective, included several steps that could contribute to delays, especially during busy travel periods.

The E-Gate Advantage

Launched in August 2025, the e-gate service streamlines the verification process significantly. With Clear’s e-gate, users simply scan their boarding pass and walk up to an automated gate where their face is scanned, instantly allowing TSA to authenticate their identity before they head to security screening.

This method eliminates the need to be passed between agents, substantially decreasing wait times and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Clear+ vs. TSA PreCheck: What’s the Difference?

While both programs aim to expedite the security process, Clear+ and TSA PreCheck are distinct offerings. Clear+ membership grants access to a dedicated lane for identity verification ahead of standard security checks, whereas TSA PreCheck provides an expedited path through security, allowing passengers to keep laptops and light jackets in their bags.

Even without TSA PreCheck, Clear+ members can still leap ahead of those in the standard ID check lines, although it’s important to note that waits can still occur in Clear+ lines during peak times.

If users have Clear+ but do not possess TSA PreCheck, they will still go through regular security screenings, but they are likely to reach that point more quickly.

Costs and Additional Benefits

The annual fee for Clear+ is set at $219. In comparison, TSA PreCheck costs $85 for a five-year membership, making it significantly cheaper in the long run. Enrollment for TSA PreCheck can be seamlessly done through Clear’s website, with applicants able to complete their application at a participating Clear location without needing to book an appointment beforehand.

For those considering either Clear+ or TSA PreCheck, certain premium travel credit cards may offer reimbursements for these memberships. Checking the benefits of your existing credit cards might reveal ways to lessen the financial burden of obtaining a membership.

Additionally, frequent flyers who attain status with specific airlines may enjoy discounts on Clear+ memberships, providing yet another incentive to consider this fast-track option.
