In a major update for Windows 11, Microsoft is introducing an integrated internet speed test tool. This new addition allows users to easily check their connection speeds without needing to visit external websites or use third-party applications.
What’s New with Windows 11
Previously, users looking to assess their internet speeds had to navigate to a separate website like Bing or download an application to gather this information. The new built-in speed test tool promises a more straightforward, efficient way to ascertain whether your connection meets expectations set by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Getting Access to the Speed Test Tool
If you’re eager to try out this feature, you’ll need to sign up for the Windows Insider Program. This program enables users to access early builds of Windows that include up-and-coming features. When registering, select the Experimental channel to ensure you get the latest updates.
Be cautious, though—Insider builds can sometimes be unstable. It’s recommended to use a spare device, a dual-boot setup, or a virtual machine for installation. Once you're enrolled, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings menu.
- Click on Windows Update.
- Select the Windows Insider Program option.
- Click on Feature Flags.
- Locate the Quick Settings Speed Test and enable it by changing the setting to Active.
After activating it, you’ll need to restart your device for the changes to take effect.
How to Use the New Speed Test
Once logged back in, accessing the speed test can be done via two methods:
- Left-click on the System tray and select Speed Test from the Quick Settings menu.
- Right-click on the Network icon and choose the option to Test Internet Speed.
To initiate the test, just click the Test button, and you’ll see real-time visualizations of both your download and upload speeds throughout the process.
A Seamless Experience
While Windows 11 previously offered a speed test option, it required users to leave the operating system for a Bing page to get results. The newly integrated tool enhances the user experience by allowing you to view results directly within the Windows environment. Microsoft has highlighted that this feature allows users to quickly evaluate their internet performance against the active connection without interrupting their workflow.
Powered by SpeedTest
The technical foundation of the speed test tool remains somewhat under wraps; however, the information icon indicates it operates with the backing of SpeedTest, a service renowned for its accurate measurements. Preliminary tests of the built-in tool have shown performance results closely aligning with those from SpeedTest's website.
Looking Ahead
The speed test feature is currently rolling out only to those in the Insider Experimental channel. While it shows great potential with its user-friendly interface and dependable results, Windows users will need to wait for its official launch for wider accessibility. The community remains optimistic that this handy feature will become available soon to enhance the Windows 11 experience.
