TUI Cruises is aggressively pursuing sustainability measures aimed at lowering emissions throughout its fleet. By integrating alternative fuels and advanced technology, the cruise line is setting ambitious energy-efficiency targets and implementing waste-reduction initiatives.
Modern Maritime Innovations
Central to this strategy are the latest ships in TUI's fleet, specifically the Mein Schiff Relax and Mein Schiff Flow. These vessels are part of the new Intuition-class and were engineered from the ground up for energy efficiency, featuring state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines that primarily utilize bio-LNG.
Reduced Fuel Consumption
Lucienne Damm, the head of sustainability at TUI Cruises, stated that these new vessels consume less fuel per passenger day compared to their predecessors, despite having a larger capacity. The company has collaborated with ports and suppliers to secure a steady supply of bio-LNG, raising awareness regarding the limitations of conventional liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is still a fossil fuel.
Since September of the previous year, the Mein Schiff Relax has been utilizing bio-LNG supported by the Port of Barcelona. Both the Relax and Flow have successfully operated on bio-LNG throughout the summer season, although some operational scenarios still require marine gas oil. TUI Cruises anticipates that Mein Schiff Flow will continue to rely on bio-LNG during this winter in Northern Europe, resulting in an estimated reduction of 50,000 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.
Exploring Green Methanol
In addition to bio-LNG, TUI Cruises is exploring green methanol as a prospective fuel alternative. Currently being tested aboard the Mein Schiff 7, Damm sees green methanol and e-LNG as crucial components for the cruise industry's long-term decarbonization efforts. However, the significant challenges facing this transition include the high cost and limited availability of green methanol.
Damm emphasizes the necessity for collaboration among cruise lines, fuel suppliers, and government entities to establish the needed infrastructure for these sustainable fuel sources.
Focus on Energy Efficiency
For TUI's smaller subsidiary, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, a different strategy is in place. With a globally operating fleet and a relatively smaller carbon footprint, the focus is on enhancing energy efficiency rather than relying solely on new fuel types. Initiatives such as utilizing second-generation biodiesel, optimizing travel routes, improving hull coatings, and employing digital tools are all part of this focus.
This commitment to energy efficiency extends to TUI Cruises’ newbuild contracts, which mandate that each new vessel be between 5% to 10% more efficient than its predecessors. Shipyards are required to verify this efficiency within the first year of operation, and the latest Intuition-class ships are held to even stricter standards.
Utilizing Technology for Sustainability
Technology plays a vital role in TUI Cruises' sustainability initiatives. The company has formed an internal fleet-performance department focused on developing AI-driven systems. These systems will monitor fuel usage, optimize voyage planning, and enhance onboard operational efficiency. A pilot program has also linked sailors' fuel-saving objectives with donations aimed at addressing marine plastic pollution in Greece.
Looking toward the future, TUI Cruises plans to launch additional Intuition-class ships in 2031 and 2032, alongside ongoing efficiency upgrades during scheduled maintenance periods. While the cruise line is committed to its broad decarbonization strategy, TUI Cruises recognizes that their long-term success hinges on the cruise industry’s ability to develop affordable and scalable low-carbon fuel supplies.
