Square Transitions Credit Card Services to Marqeta for Enhanced Innovation

Square Partners with Marqeta

Square has officially transitioned its business credit card services to Marqeta's platform, as announced in a recent press release. This move aims to further streamline the financial offerings available to Square sellers, integrating credit and debit services into a single cohesive platform.

Benefits of the Migration

According to Andrea Raj, who oversees product development for Square Banking at Block (Square's parent company), this change means that Square can respond more efficiently to the needs of sellers. Raj emphasized that integrating these services on Marqeta's platform enhances the speed and security of the financial products they provide.

“Migrating our existing cardholders without any disruption to their experience was critical, and Marqeta delivered,” Raj stated. This seamless transition highlights Marqeta’s strong portfolio migration capabilities, which ensure cardholders experience no inconvenience during the switch.

Strong Foundations in Financial Services

Square and Marqeta have enjoyed a collaborative relationship since 2019, when they first introduced the Square Card—a debit card that allows small business owners immediate access to their earnings without incurring extra fees. This initial partnership laid the groundwork for the current integration, facilitating a more robust service offering for Square's business clients.

Marqeta’s commercial credit platform boasts advanced features like card issuance, transaction processing, underwriting, as well as rewards management and risk controls, which keep the entire process efficient and manageable. This comprehensive program management capability reduces the need for engaging multiple vendors, thereby accelerating market readiness for Square.

A Thriving Partnership

Marqeta's Chief Revenue Officer, Todd Pollak, highlighted the depth of their partnership with Block, suggesting that their collaborative endeavors extend well past individual programs. Pollak noted, “This launch is a strong example of what that partnership enables, bringing Square’s full card portfolio onto one platform.” This shift positions Square to innovate credit products more swiftly, optimizing resources for small business owners.

As Marqeta continues to evolve, their focus on embedded finance, multinational issuing, stablecoins, and commercial payments indicates a strategic direction aimed at fostering growth in the financial services landscape.

Square's Progress and Outlook

In a separate earnings call during August, Block shared that Square’s payment volume in the U.S. experienced a notable 10% increase in the second quarter—the fastest rate since early 2023. This upward trend signals robust performance and supports the rationale behind the migration to Marqeta's platform, reinforcing Square's commitment to providing better services for merchants.

As Square continues to offer comprehensive financial solutions for businesses through this partnership with Marqeta, sellers can expect enhanced services designed to meet their evolving needs in the competitive landscape of commerce.
