New Outdoor Experience at Pittsburgh International Airport
Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has recently enhanced its terminal with the launch of the North Airside Terrace, the first outdoor space available beyond the security checkpoint. This innovative feature allows travelers to enjoy the fresh air while they await their flights.
About the North Airside Terrace
Spanning over 1,000 square feet, the terrace is conveniently situated at the beginning of Concourse D, directly across from a display by Dick’s Sporting Goods. The design includes comfortable built-in benches, tables, chairs, and local plant life, while also incorporating a designated pet relief area. Future expansions of the terrace are also planned.
Sustainability and Aesthetic Design
The terrace is part of PIT’s new terminal development, crafted with the collaboration of Gensler, HDR, and luis vidal + architects. The overall terminal plan includes a total of four open-air terraces: two before security and an additional two after the checkpoint.
Notably, the North Airside Terrace follows the recent launch of the UPMC Terrace, which opened its doors just a few months prior. The remaining two terraces are scheduled for completion in 2027, with funding support from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Hillman Foundation.
A Focus on Wellbeing and Community
Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, expressed pride in opening this latest outdoor space, which she believes offers a unique experience for passengers and staff alike. She emphasized that these terraces are designed to reflect the beauty of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, contributing positively to the travel experience.
Luis Vidal, the lead architect behind the terminal’s design, highlighted the importance of incorporating spaces that cater to passenger wellbeing, connection with nature, and overall experience. Instead of merely being transit points, these outdoor areas serve as engaging spaces for activities and community events.
Architectural Inspiration and Integral Design
The terraces are inspired by the diverse landscapes of the region. The UPMC Terrace captures the essence of the rivers and hills of the Western Allegheny Plateau, while the airside terraces echo the ruggedness of the Central Appalachians, complete with local sandstone from nearby quarries used for their construction.
Moreover, the creative construction of the new landside terminal effectively utilizes the existing terminal’s structure. The interplay of different floor levels creates previously underutilized areas that have now become vibrant open spaces.
Accessibility for All Travelers
Importantly, access to these outdoor terraces does not require any additional fees or membership to private lounges, making them an inviting option for all travelers navigating through Pittsburgh Airport.
As airports increasingly design for security and efficiency, this revitalization effort at PIT highlights the growing acknowledgment of the need for nature and wellness within travel environments.
