New Loyalty Link: Southwest and Etihad Unite Their Programs

Introducing a New Era for Frequent Flyers

In an exciting development for travelers, Southwest Airlines and Etihad Airways have announced a partnership to integrate their loyalty programs, Etihad Guest and Rapid Rewards. This collaboration will begin in spring 2027, offering members the opportunity to engage with both airlines' networks.

Earning and Redeeming Miles

Members of the Etihad Guest program will enjoy benefits when flying on select Southwest flights. They will be able to accumulate miles that can be redeemed across Southwest's extensive operational network, which includes destinations throughout the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

On the flip side, Southwest's Rapid Rewards members will earn points on eligible Etihad flights. These points can be used across Etihad's global flight network, which is continually expanding to include exciting new spots like Krabi, Zanzibar, and Hanoi.

Details on Program Enhancements

This partnership is a part of the broader enhancements being rolled out by Southwest Airlines, which were detailed during their announcement on October 15. Starting January 1, 2027, Southwest will introduce new tier levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. This move is set to elevate the earning potential for members, specifically enabling international rewards via partnerships with airline companies like Icelandair, China Airlines, and now Etihad Airways.

What Members Need to Know

  • Airlines Involved: The partnership involves Southwest Airlines and Etihad Airways.
  • Start Date: The program integration will commence in the spring of 2027.
  • Benefits: Members will be able to earn and redeem loyalty rewards on specific flights of both airlines.
  • Access to Destinations: Rapid Rewards members will benefit from Etihad's global offerings, while Etihad Guest members will have access to Southwest's flights in North America and beyond.
  • Executive Comments: Mark Potter of Etihad Guest and Nandika Suri of Southwest shared enthusiasm regarding the partnership, highlighting its potential to enhance travel options for their loyal customers.

Both loyalty programs operate independently under this agreement, differing from Southwest's existing interline agreements, which typically lack mileage benefits. Previous partnerships with airlines like Singapore Airlines will not feature integrated earnings or redemptions, showcasing the uniqueness of the collaboration with Etihad.

Rewards and Opportunities

The options for utilizing Etihad Guest miles are diverse, including flights, upgrades, and using them for accommodations and vacation packages. Rapid Rewards, on the other hand, offers flexibility as members can earn points on all fare types with no restrictions on available seating. Points also remain valid without expiration, enhancing the value for frequent travelers.

“We are pleased to announce our partnership with Southwest Airlines and Rapid Rewards,” said Mark Potter, CEO of Etihad Guest. “This partnership enriches our portfolio and strengthens our presence in North America.”

Nandika Suri, VP of Rapid Rewards, echoed this sentiment, stating how this collaboration will provide increased value and exciting travel experiences for Southwest members. They look forward to welcoming Etihad Guest members into the Southwest network.

Growing Connectivity

Etihad currently provides service to six major U.S. cities: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, New York-JFK, and Washington-Dulles. Additionally, flights to Toronto will soon be joined by new routes to Calgary, commencing October 25.

Full details regarding the partnership are expected to be readily available on both airlines' websites closer to its launch in 2027, offering both existing and new members plenty of time to explore these exciting new possibilities.
