Navigating IT Modernization: The Promise of Agentic AI

Exploring the role of agentic AI in IT modernization efforts and its challenges.

Modernizing IT systems is an ongoing challenge that CIOs have faced for many years. The task usually involves transitioning applications from outdated mainframes to more advanced platforms, whether they are cloud-based or on-premises solutions.

Challenges in IT Modernization

The pursuit of IT modernization has led organizations to adopt various technologies, including microservices, virtualization, and newer server architectures. Despite these efforts, many businesses find that the results of their modernization initiatives are often disappointing.

A recent study conducted by Kyndryl revealed that only half of the organizations that embarked on modernization efforts reported better IT operations or significant innovation. Alarmingly, 18% of respondents expressed that their initiatives yielded limited or unclear value. Additionally, many organizations find themselves behind schedule and facing rising costs.

Introducing Agentic AI

As the need for a more sophisticated approach to IT modernization grows, agentic AI emerges as a potential solution. This innovative technology aims to enhance—not merely replace—existing systems, focusing on improving business capabilities within an organization's IT landscape.

Kyndryl's research indicates that traditional motivations like cost reduction are evolving. Now, organizations are looking at how AI can help create a cohesive technology ecosystem that encompasses both modern and legacy systems. Agentic AI is designed to provide visibility into hidden dependencies between these systems, a challenge that almost 90% of companies currently struggle with.

Streamlining Processes with AI

One of the significant benefits of agentic AI lies in its ability to simplify traditionally complex tasks. It can map out system dependencies, generate code, and even produce necessary documentation—activities that typically demand extensive time and human resources. Organizations that embrace agentic AI are less likely to face delays compared to those that do not.

Despite its promise, the integration of AI into modernization efforts does not come without hurdles. Andy Thurai, founder of The Field CTO and a former strategist at IBM, points out that many enterprises still rely on legacy systems like mainframes. He notes that IT modernization can feel like a never-ending journey, with organizations continuously striving for improvement.

The Ongoing Journey

Thurai also highlights an interesting point about the ongoing maintenance of legacy systems. Many organizations fall into a cycle of purchasing new software without properly decommissioning outdated systems. This creates a complex landscape of technical debt that complicates modernization efforts.

Furthermore, the surge in AI adoption can lead to unanticipated infrastructure costs. As vendors promote AI as a universal solution, business leaders may encounter issues with unpredictable expenses arising from the very technologies intended to ease their burdens.

Despite these challenges, organizations that move beyond superficial applications of AI are beginning to see tangible benefits. By leveraging agentic AI frameworks, they can uncover hidden technical relationships and reduce the manual labor typically associated with these processes.

Nevertheless, as Thurai warns, what is seen as a cutting-edge solution today could very well become tomorrow's legacy system requiring further modernization. The cycle of IT evolution continues—each advancement potentially paving the way for the next set of challenges to address.
