Mumbai Welcomes 44 New AC Electric Buses to BEST Fleet

Significant Fleet Expansion

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has taken a big step in improving its public transportation system by adding 44 new fully air-conditioned electric buses to its fleet. These 12-metre-long buses will begin service on five designated routes, enhancing connectivity and convenience for commuters.

Official Launch Event

The buses were inaugurated on November 3, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Magathane Depot, attended by BEST Committee Chairperson Trupti Vishwasrao among other dignitaries.

Partnership with Evey Trans Maharashtra

The new buses come through a rental agreement with Evey Trans Maharashtra Pvt. Ltd., which has committed to provide a total of 2,400 electric buses to BEST. Before the latest addition, the company had already delivered 50 buses, bringing the total count to 94 vehicles in BEST's fleet. This expansion is part of BEST's strategy to meet the growing demand for public transport, especially on high-traffic routes, thereby reducing passenger waiting times.

Fleet Growth under the PM E-Drive Scheme

BEST's current expansion is fueled by the PM E-Drive scheme initiated by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The organization plans to acquire a total of 2,000 electric buses, including 1,500 new air-conditioned midi buses and an additional 2,400 electric buses. This initiative aims to modernize Mumbai's public transport and promote cleaner urban transportation.

Passenger Comfort and Advanced Features

The newly procured buses boast several enhancements aimed at improving the travel experience for passengers. Notably, there is a 16% reduction in battery weight, with battery units now situated beneath the vehicle instead of on the roof, optimizing space usage. Additionally, 41 of the buses offer more spacious seating arrangements, along with user-friendly doors designed for easier boarding.

Improved Charging Technology

Equipped with Combined Charging System (CCS-2) technology, these buses can be charged up to 58% faster than older systems, minimizing downtime and improving service efficiency.

Safety Features for Enhanced Security

In an effort to prioritize passenger safety, the new electric buses come equipped with a range of advanced safety features, including Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), hydraulic power-assisted steering, and CCTV surveillance. Moreover, the introduction of emergency panic buttons and vehicle tracking systems further enhances security. These operations will be monitored from BEST's command-and-control centre in Agara, ensuring real-time tracking.

Routes Connecting Key Locations

All 44 electric buses will be based at the Magathane Depot and will operate on five routes that link essential areas in both Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs. Important stops include Kandivali Bus Station (East), Sangharsh Nagar in Chandivali, Samata Nagar Bus Station in Kandivali East, Borivali Station (East), Thane Station (East), and Mira Road Station (East). With these upgrades, BEST is set to provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for its commuters.
