New Transatlantic Routes for Icelandair
Icelandair has announced its first two North American routes utilizing the upcoming Airbus A320neo fleet, with services set to commence in September 2027.
From Reykjavík's Keflavik International Airport (KEF), the airline will operate flights to both Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. Each route will feature six flights per week, marking a significant step in Icelandair's fleet modernization.
Details of the A320neo Services
The inaugural flight to Toronto is slated for September 13, 2027, followed by the New York service starting on October 1. While Icelandair already has existing services on these routes, the deployment of the A320neos brings enhanced aircraft options to the airline's offerings.
Passengers can expect evening departures from Iceland and returning overnight flights from North America. Specifically, flights FI605 and FI604 will serve Toronto, and flights FI619 and FI618 will connect to New York.

Refreshing the Fleet
This announcement is part of a broader effort by Icelandair to revamp its fleet, moving away from its aging Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft. The airline has arranged to lease 10 Airbus A320neos, which will help to cut operational costs and improve efficiency.
Icelandair's CEO, Bogi Nils Bogason, emphasized the benefits of transitioning to newer aircraft, noting that the A320neo can consume up to 30% less fuel per passenger, leading to substantial fuel savings.
The new A320neos are being procured from AviLease and Aircastle, with several set to arrive before summer 2027. The aircraft, built between 2018 and 2020, are equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines, showcasing advanced technology for enhanced performance.
Strategic Partnerships and Expanding Connectivity
In tandem with these new routes, Icelandair's partnership with Alaska Airlines has been strengthened through an expanded codeshare agreement. This move allows for two-way ticketing on six European routes from Reykjavík, further enhancing connectivity for travelers between the US and Europe.
The revised codeshare includes popular destinations such as Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich, broadening travel options for Alaska Airlines customers. With Alaska's seasonal flights from Seattle to Reykjavík starting in May 2026, passengers now have additional one-stop options to Europe.
Icelandair's strategy indicates a focus on optimizing transatlantic connectivity without solely relying on larger aircraft. The introduction of smaller A320neos aligns with the airline’s goal to match capacity with customer demand effectively.
As Icelandair prepares for its fleet transition, these new routes and partnerships promise greater flexibility and a more competitive edge within the aviation market.
