Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are about to undergo a significant transformation as part of their strategic 'Alaska Accelerate' program. By 2028, both airlines will unveil a range of exciting cabin upgrades and brand-new lounges, redefining air travel for their passengers.
Upgraded Cabins on Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines is introducing its new Aurora Suites, set to debut on its Boeing 787 fleet. The refurbished Dreamliners, inherited from Hawaiian, will feature these lie-flat business class suites, showcasing the stunning aesthetics of Alaska's brand with natural wood finishes and colors inspired by the Northern Lights. A total of 34 Aurora Suites will be available on the 787-9 models, while 40 suites will be included in the upcoming 787-10 deliveries.
Innovative Business Class on the 737s
In a move to elevate transcontinental service, Alaska Airlines will also be adding lie-flat business class suites to select Boeing 737 routes. Adopting a single-aisle configuration, the airline's new Aurora Suites will face the window, offering a unique seating experience. This upgrade will feature at least 25 of the new Boeing 737 MAX 10 deliveries, enhancing comfort for long-haul travelers.
Hawaiian Airlines' Leihōkū Suite Overhaul
As part of the merger adjustments, Hawaiian Airlines will upgrade its fleet of A330s, introducing new Leihōkū Suites. These lie-flat seats will maintain a design consistent with Alaska's Aurora Suites, featuring rich purple upholstery and modern amenities like privacy doors and Bluetooth connectivity. All 24 A330s will receive these upgrades by 2028, ensuring that Hawaiian maintains a competitive edge.
Introduction of Premium Economy
Both airlines are set to enhance their service offerings with the introduction of Premium Reserve, a new premium economy class. Alaska will feature 35 seats in a 2-3-2 layout on its Boeing 787s, while Hawaiian will offer 28 seats in the same setup on its A330s. On Alaska's transcontinental-configured 737 MAX 10s, 12 seats will feature a 2-2 layout. Passengers can expect more legroom, wider seats, and upgraded entertainment options across both airlines.
New Lounge Experience in Honolulu
Hawaiian Airlines will also debut a new lounge in Honolulu, designed to vastly improve the passenger experience. Set to open in early 2028, the lounge will cover 1,200 square meters, significantly larger than the current Plumeria Lounge. It will feature locally inspired food and drinks, a full-service bar, and even a coffee experience for travelers.
Future Prospects for Alaska Air Group
The ambitious upgrades are part of Alaska Air Group's goal to establish itself as a major global player in the airline industry. With plans to operate 15 intercontinental routes from Seattle by 2030, this expansion positions Alaska Airlines as a contender in long-haul travel, especially after acquiring Hawaiian Airlines.
As both airlines prepare for these significant changes, frequent flyers can look forward to enhanced products and services, plus the prospect of redeemable Avios through the oneworld airline alliance. These upgrades ensure that passengers will have a superior travel experience while maintaining the unique identities of both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines.
