First APEX Security Review in Cambodia
Techo International Airport (KTI) in Phnom Penh recently marked a significant milestone by hosting the inaugural APEX in Security review in Cambodia from October 5-9, 2026. Conducted by Airports Council International (ACI), this review was in collaboration with Cambodia Airports and Cambodia Airport Investment Co. (CAIC).
Insights from Global Security Experts
The review team included Mr. Gary Leung, Senior Manager for Security and Facilitation at ACI APAC & MID, who was pivotal in delivering recommendations for enhancing the airport's security measures. Opened in September 2025, KTI replaced the older Phnom Penh International Airport, positioning itself as the primary airport for the city.
Joining Mr. Leung were seasoned security experts from prominent airports around the world, including Hong Kong International, Changi, Narita, Incheon, and Hyderabad Airports. Their collective expertise aimed to bolster KTI's security compliance and operational efficiency.
APEX Program's Global Impact
The APEX in Security program, initiated in 2017, focuses on peer assessments to support airports in aligning with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). With over 60 reviews conducted worldwide, the program continues to play a vital role in reinforcing international aviation security.
Engagement with Civil Aviation Authorities
During his visit, Mr. Leung also took time to meet with H.E. Phan Chantuch, the Aviation Security Director of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA). The discussions were productive, emphasizing ACI's ongoing dedication to improving global aviation security.
A Call to Action for Airports
The successful completion of the APEX review at Techo International Airport showcases ACI's commitment to working extensively with industry stakeholders and authorities. Airports aiming to conduct their own APEX security review or interested in becoming voluntary security assessors can reach out to ACI APAC & MID for more details.
