Enhance Your Mouse Experience with New PowerToys Features

Discover the latest mouse utilities in Microsoft’s PowerToys, designed to make text selection and focus easier.

Enhance Your Mouse Experience with New PowerToys Features

Microsoft has rolled out an exciting update to its PowerToys utility, introducing two new features that promise to improve your mouse experience significantly. The latest version, PowerToys 0.102, brings Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide, each designed to tackle common frustrations faced by users.

Unveiling New Mouse Tools

If you've ever struggled with long text selections or found your mouse cursor a distraction while typing, these new features could be just what you need. To take advantage of these updates, you must install or upgrade PowerToys, which can be easily done via the Microsoft Store or GitHub.

For those installing PowerToys for the first time, simply click the Download button on the PowerToys Microsoft Store page or select the appropriate .exe file on the GitHub page. Existing users can easily update by launching PowerToys from the Start menu or System Tray and following the prompts for updates.

Effortless Text Selection with Mouse Button Lock

We’ve all been there: trying to select salient text, only to find that maintaining pressure on the mouse button is cumbersome, especially over long passages. Fortunately, the new Mouse Button Lock feature simplifies this process.

To utilize Mouse Button Lock, hold down your chosen mouse button for about one to two seconds. Once released, you can navigate through the text, and it will be highlighted automatically until you click the button again. This method lets you focus more on the selection rather than the mechanics of it.

PowerToys enhances this functionality compared to the built-in ClickLock feature available in Windows. With PowerToys, you have increased flexibility by choosing which mouse button to use, adjusting the activation duration down to milliseconds, and setting how far the cursor can travel before selection stops.

For example, I configured my right mouse button for a duration of 1.5 seconds and a 100-pixel distance, making my text selection feel much smoother. Try it yourself by adjusting it to your preference!

Stay Focused with CursorHide

Another notable addition is CursorHide, a feature designed to help eliminate distractions caused by the mouse cursor. When enabled, it automatically hides the cursor while you're typing or when there's a period of inactivity.

To activate CursorHide, navigate to the Mouse Utilities section in PowerToys. You can turn on options for hiding the cursor while typing, during inactivity, or both. For inactivity, the delay can be customized from 1 to 60 seconds, allowing you to set what feels most comfortable. I opted for both features with a 5-second delay.

Once you have CursorHide operational, open any text application, and witness the cursor disappear as you begin typing. Just move the mouse, and it appears again. This simple feature enhances your focus by removing visual clutter on the screen.

Explore More with PowerToys

The new mouse utilities aren’t the only highlights of PowerToys. This tool boasts over 30 features tailored for improving your Windows experience. Additional tools like the Find My Mouse, which makes it easier to spot a roaming cursor, and Mouse Highlighter, which visually emphasizes your clicks, are invaluable for enhancing your workflow.

PowerToys is an incredible free utility that caters to everyone, from casual users to advanced tech enthusiasts. I encourage you to explore the various tools and activate the ones that fit your work style best. With the ease of toggling features on and off, enhancing your productivity has never been simpler.
