Emirates Introduces Innovative Accessibility Features at Expo

Emirates Showcases Accessibility Innovations

During the AccessAbilities Expo in Dubai, Emirates unveiled a range of innovative accessibility concepts designed to enhance travel experiences for individuals with disabilities. Running from October 19 to 21, the event featured a stand inaugurated by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline & Group.

Features for Inclusive Travel

Emirates aims to lead the aviation sector toward a more inclusive future. Mostafa Karam, the airline’s divisional senior vice president of customer affairs, emphasized the importance of accessibility throughout the journey—from planning to boarding, and finally to the destination.

Cabin Familiarization Experience

One of the standout features introduced is a cabin familiarization experience designed specifically for visually impaired travelers. This immersive activation incorporates spatial audio technology, enabling users to engage in a tactile examination of the aircraft's environment.

Guests can sit in a real A350 seat equipped with a U-Dream headrest, where audio descriptions guide them through the cabin layout, enhancing their understanding of the onboard atmosphere.

Accessible Lounge Suite

The airline is also developing an accessible lounge suite that represents a significant upgrade from its existing Emirates Lounge Suites in First Class. Key features of this design include:

  • Wheelchair-accessible layouts with powered recliners.
  • Integrated grab bars for safety and ease.
  • Dedicated storage space for wheelchairs and transfer areas.

This lounge suite prototype is currently aimed at First Class, but there is potential for expansion to other classes in the future.

Biometric Boarding Gates

At Dubai's Terminal 3, the airline has already implemented accessible boarding gates that utilize barrier-free designs. These gates are equipped with cameras that automatically adjust to accommodate the needs of wheelchair users. Self-service check-in kiosks have also been upgraded, featuring text-to-speech functionality, braille, tactile interfaces, and headphone connectivity to improve user experience.

Enhanced Existing Services

In addition to new concepts, Emirates highlighted several existing services geared towards making air travel more accessible:

  • Travel Rehearsals: More than 80 rehearsals conducted across six continents have benefited over 400 families with children and young adults on the autism spectrum, allowing them to practice the various stages of airport travel.
  • Accessibility Hub: The Emirates.com website hosts an Accessible & Inclusive Travel Hub, offering tailored information based on different disabilities, journey phases, and specific requirements.
  • Inflight Entertainment: The ice entertainment system offers more than 850 movies with closed captions and 200 movies with audio descriptions, along with advanced navigation systems designed for accessibility.
  • Sensory Products: To aid neurodivergent passengers and those who experience anxiety, fidget toys and sensory items are available across all cabin classes.
  • Chauffeur Drive Services: The airline provides 10 wheelchair-accessible Mercedes V Class vehicles in Dubai for eligible First and Business Class passengers, with plans for further expansion of service accessibility.

In recognition of its ongoing commitment to serving travelers with special needs, Emirates became the world’s first autism-certified airline in March 2025. The establishment of an Office of Accessibility and Inclusion highlights the airline’s dedication to fostering a travel experience that is truly inclusive.
