Creating Unforgettable Memories on a Preschool Class Trip

Organizing a class trip for 30 people, including parents and kids, is no small feat, but it can lead to unforgettable experiences. Recently, our preschool embarked on an exciting 3-day, 2-night journey that turned out to be an adventure full of laughter, learning, and close community bonds.

Planning Ahead with Room Assignments

Ahead of the trip, we thought it would be beneficial to create a room assignment map to help everyone navigate our accommodations. Appreciating this suggestion, I enlisted Claude to help design a floor plan of our lodging. However, when the time came to assign rooms, flexibility took precedence. The children had various preferences—some wanted to share rooms with their moms, while others opted to sleep near their friends. Ultimately, we decided to let go of the map and flow with the kids’ wishes.

Even without a strict plan, we ensured that bedtime was enforced at 9:00 PM, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the parents. This contributed to a good night’s rest, ensuring that everyone had the energy for the next day’s adventures.

Encouraging Participation with a Mission Page

To keep the kids engaged, we created a mission page in our travel guide. This encouraged them to help with various activities throughout the trip. Tasks included meal preparation, cleaning up, and even stargazing. The children loved checking off each task, and it was heartwarming to see their excitement as they completed each mission.

Some families even contributed stamps and colored pens, turning the guidebooks into creative keepsakes filled with drawings and memories from our adventure. The day after returning, the kids reflected on their experiences, filling out “What I Found” and “Reflection” pages. With adorable drawings and notes, they shared their discoveries and even wrote about certain challenges faced during the trip—some even claiming there were “None”!

Building a Community Through Travel

This trip not only provided fun for our little explorers but also reinforced the strength of our parenting community. Having other moms and dads around helped to diffuse the stress of childcare and allowed for shared experiences. One family even extended their stay after their child was captivated by the guide, demonstrating how impactful a simple trip plan can be.

I have always believed in the power of reflection, especially after years in the workforce. Witnessing my daughter actively engage with the guidebook reminded me of the importance of travel-based education, or 'Tabi-iku'. It’s about creating tools that inspire excitement and encourage children to participate in their journey right from the planning stage.

Looking ahead, I'm eager to develop more travel notebooks that enrich children's experiences and create lasting memories. Who knows? Perhaps our next adventure will bring a new guidebook full of excitement!
