Copenhagen Airport (CPH) has recently experienced significant delays at its security checkpoints, a situation attributed to regulatory changes mandated by Danish authorities. Passengers have reported long wait times, some of which reached up to an hour, leading to numerous missed flights and subsequent rebookings.
Reason Behind the Delays
The delays started becoming frequent in October, with travelers expressing frustration on social media as they documented lengthy queues. According to CPH, a regulatory mandate from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority implemented on October 8 required them to adjust their security procedures.
In a statement issued on October 28, the airport explained that the order, initially received on October 6, pushed for stricter security measures that extended the timeframe of the screening process. While specific details of the regulatory order have not been disclosed, CPH confirmed that it demanded an increase in staffing levels at security checkpoints.
Staffing Challenges and Passenger Experience
Despite efforts to comply with the order, CPH admitted they underestimated the necessary staffing needed to accommodate increased security protocols. They acknowledged that while their staffing levels were generally adequate on most days, certain dates, particularly October 8, 22, 23, and 24, saw a shortfall, resulting in extended wait times.
In response to the situation, CPH expressed regret over the inconvenience faced by travelers, stating, “There were periods of long waiting times. This resulted in a poor experience for passengers at the airport. This is, of course, not satisfactory, and we are very sorry that passengers had this experience.”
Commitment to Safety
Despite these operational challenges, CPH reassured the public of its commitment to safety. The airport emphasized that flying from Copenhagen Airport remains secure and expressed appreciation for the authorities' proactive measures in enhancing safety standards. They also highlighted their readiness to adjust security procedures promptly to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
The airport continues to work on normalizing operations as they navigate the new regulations, aiming for a more efficient security process to enhance the passenger experience moving forward.
