New Era of Collaboration
Air Astana and China Southern Airlines have officially partnered, signing a joint venture agreement on October 30, 2026, that aims to enhance air connectivity between Kazakhstan and China. This historic collaboration marks the first airline joint venture between the two nations.
Building upon an existing codeshare agreement, both airlines will synchronize their flight schedules, broaden their codeshare services, and engage in joint marketing strategies, thus solidifying their partnership.
Increased Flight Opportunities
The travel market between Kazakhstan and China is thriving, seeing a remarkable 52 percent increase in flights compared to the previous year. Currently, there are 117 scheduled flights weekly across 21 routes. In 2026 alone, over one million passengers have already traveled between the two countries. According to Talgat Lastaev, Deputy Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, there are plans to expand this network further, with aims to add up to 30 destinations.
Voices Behind the Partnership
Richard Ledger, Vice President of Partnerships and Alliances at Air Astana, expressed enthusiasm for the joint venture, stating, "China is a strategically important market for Air Astana. Kazakhstan serves as a key gateway between Europe and Asia. Our partnership with China Southern Airlines is pivotal in enhancing this role and enriching our commercial ties with one of China's leading airlines. By merging our strengths and aligning our commercial strategies, we can offer passengers improved choices, more convenient connections, and consistent travel conditions across both airlines."
China Southern Airlines' executive vice president, Zeng Yongchao, emphasized the significance of this collaboration under the Belt and Road framework: "This joint venture stands as a significant milestone in aviation connectivity between our two countries. It embodies our mutual goal of nurturing a prosperous regional market. The strategic nature of this partnership will enhance operational efficiency, providing passengers with a wealth of new options, simplified transfer processes, and a seamless travel experience along the Belt and Road air routes."
Enhanced Passenger Experience
In a move to further improve the travel experience, Air Astana announced on October 29 the installation of high-speed satellite Wi-Fi in its Airbus A321LR fleet. This initiative, in collaboration with global satellite communications provider SES, marks an important technological enhancement for the airline. The first flight featuring this upgraded connectivity took place on October 29, operating on the Almaty-Tashkent route.
This upgrade not only reflects Air Astana's commitment to elevating passenger convenience but also demonstrates the airline's broader mission to embrace innovation as it expands its international presence.
