ACI APAC & MID Push for Enhanced Airport Security and Sustainability

ACI APAC & MID emphasizes the need for regional airports to bolster security, connectivity, and climate resilience during a recent meeting in Doha.

The Airports Council International for the Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) has issued a call for enhanced measures to boost airport security and resilience across the region. These recommendations were made during the 8th ICAO Meeting of Directors General of Civil Aviation for the Middle East (DGCA-MID/8), held in Doha, Qatar, in late October 2026.

Strengthening Security Against Emerging Threats

One of the primary concerns discussed at the meeting was the protection of airports from potential drone attacks and other security threats. ACI APAC & MID, in collaboration with Qatar and CASP-MID, emphasized the need for cooperative efforts to safeguard airports.

Member states, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates, expressed their support for these security initiatives. In response, ACI APAC & MID plans to engage with ICAO and regional partners to organize joint workshops and webinars in 2027, fostering greater cooperation and awareness.

Advancements in Screening Technologies

Another topic of note was the need for improved screening procedures for liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs). ACI APAC & MID proposed trials utilizing advanced technologies, such as CT scanners, to enhance security measures and streamline the screening process for travelers.

The meeting participants agreed on the importance of supporting airports in these technological trials while also improving communication with passengers as international screening standards evolve.

Restoring Air Connectivity

Restoring air connectivity post-pandemic was highlighted as a critical priority. ACI APAC & MID stated that airports must secure the necessary investments to accommodate future growth in air travel. The meeting urged member states to facilitate the recovery of air traffic and improve access to funding for sustainable airport development projects.

Climate Resilience Initiatives

Furthermore, ACI APAC & MID presented their climate resilience initiatives aimed at assisting airports in evaluating climate-related risks. A pilot study covering 47 airports identified significant risks from extreme weather, impacting nearly 58% of the assessed airport infrastructure.

Member states were encouraged to get involved in the ACI APAC & MID Net Zero Roadmap Programme and utilize complimentary tools offered by the Association to mitigate climate risks.

Business Continuity and Future Readiness

The importance of integrating business continuity strategies with existing safety and emergency management plans was another vital point. ACI APAC & MID stressed that this integration is essential for sustaining operations during disruptions and facilitating safe recovery of operations.

Stefano Baronci, the Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, stated, “Airports are critical economic infrastructure. Protecting them from emerging threats, ensuring they can withstand disruptions, and investing in their future are shared responsibilities. We welcome the support from Member States for our recommendations and look forward to working together to make airports across the Middle East safer, more resilient, and better prepared for the future.”
