Frontier Airlines announced a four-route expansion and plans to introduce inflight Wi‑Fi, the Denver-based low-cost carrier said Thursday. The schedule change adds three new services and reinstates one route, connecting six U.S. cities for the winter travel season.
New and returning routes
– Newark (EWR) to Orlando (MCO): begins Jan. 21, three times weekly.
– Salt Lake City (SLC) to Tucson (TUS): begins Jan. 22, twice weekly.
– Orlando (MCO) to Pensacola (PNS): begins Feb. 13, twice weekly.
– Miami (MIA) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD): returning Feb. 13, three times weekly. Frontier last flew MIA–ORD in 2022, according to Cirium schedule data; restoring the link between two major hubs could attract attention from larger carriers such as American and United.
Inflight Wi‑Fi plans
Frontier has traditionally operated without onboard internet to keep fares low, but that approach appears to be shifting. CEO Barry Biffle replied to a social media post saying “it’s coming.” A company spokesperson told media the airline hopes to select a Wi‑Fi partner within the next year and that competition among vendors is intensifying.
Adding connectivity would bring Frontier in line with broader industry moves: each of the six largest U.S. carriers has committed to offering free or widely available inflight internet. The carrier has also announced plans to add first-class seating on some aircraft, signaling a broader move away from its ultra-basic model.
Timing and outlook
The new routes start between Jan. 21 and Feb. 13, expanding winter service to warm-weather destinations and restoring a key Miami–Chicago business market. If Frontier chooses a Wi‑Fi provider within a year, installations could roll out over the following months to a few years depending on vendor timelines and aircraft retrofits.
Frontier frames these steps as part of evolving its product while remaining a low-cost option, aiming to balance added amenities with competitive fares.
