Allegiant Air announced an eight-route expansion this fall, adding service that strengthens its presence in South Florida and elsewhere in the state. The carrier is launching four new routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and additional service from Orlando Sanford, St. Pete–Clearwater and Punta Gorda.
Why it matters
– The moves signal Allegiant is eager to capture traffic left when Spirit Airlines ceased operations earlier this month. JetBlue has also moved quickly to add flights at FLL, and Allegiant’s announcement makes clear it won’t cede the airport entirely.
– The expansion follows Allegiant’s recent closing of its acquisition of Sun Country Airlines, another low-cost carrier.
New routes and launch dates
– Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Boston Logan (BOS) — Oct. 1
– Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Omaha Eppley (OMA) — Oct. 2
– Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Pittsburgh (PIT) — Oct. 2
– Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Kansas City (MCI) — Oct. 2
– St. Pete–Clearwater (PIE) to Philadelphia (PHL) — Oct. 2
– St. Pete–Clearwater (PIE) to Columbia Regional, Missouri (COU) — Nov. 19
– Orlando Sanford (SFB) to Trenton–Mercer, New Jersey (TTN) — Oct. 2
– Punta Gorda (PGD) to La Crosse, Wisconsin (LSE) — Oct. 1
By the numbers
– 3: Routes Allegiant is adding that were served by Spirit before it shut down (BOS, PIT, MCI).
– 2: FLL routes that will pit Allegiant directly against JetBlue (BOS and PIT).
– 1: A route returning to Allegiant’s schedule — Orlando Sanford to Trenton was previously flown by the carrier in 2017.
What to expect
Most of the new flights begin in early October, with one route to Columbia starting in mid-November. The expansion spans leisure-focused Florida airports while re-establishing links to several Northeast and Midwest cities, reflecting Allegiant’s strategy of connecting smaller or underserved airports to popular Florida destinations.
This growth not only fills gaps left by a competitor’s exit but also increases competition at Fort Lauderdale as carriers reposition their networks for the fall and winter travel seasons.
