Over the past year I’ve come to rely on the 30-liter NEMO Equipment Double Haul, a bag that functions as a duffel when you need it and a tote when you don’t. NEMO markets the two-mode design as revolutionary; that may be overstating it, but it is a smart reimagining of a classic carryall.
The bag uses two sets of handles and side straps so it can expand or compress. The duffel handles are semi-rigid and low-profile, tucking neatly into the top. Compression straps at each end let you cinch the pack down for a compact shape that fits in an overhead bin or can be carried like a backpack.

Switching to tote mode is simple: unclasp the compression straps and pull the tote handles from their nesting pockets. In about five seconds you have a shoulder-carry tote, and the bag’s capacity grows from 30 liters to 40.
Since I got the Double Haul I’ve hardly used other duffels. Semi-flexible side stays help the bag stay open when loading and unloading. There’s one interior zip pocket and one exterior zip pocket. It’s versatile, attractive, and well-reviewed—NEMO’s site listed 172 reviews averaging 4.9 stars when I checked. The Double Haul is also available in 55‑liter ($180), 70‑liter ($200), and 100‑liter ($220) sizes. I wouldn’t replace a perfectly good duffel, but if you’re shopping, put this one near the top of your list.
