On Nov. 9, Marriott announced it has terminated its licensing agreement with Sonder, saying the agreement “is no longer in effect due to Sonder’s default.” That change means Sonder properties are no longer affiliated with Marriott and cannot be booked through Marriott’s channels. Marriott Bonvoy members can no longer redeem Bonvoy points at Sonder locations.
Marriott says it is prioritizing support for guests currently staying at Sonder properties and for customers who booked Sonder stays through Marriott channels. The company will reach out to guests who booked via marriott.com, the Marriott Bonvoy app, or Marriott’s reservation centers to help manage reservations and rebooking where needed. Travelers who made Sonder reservations through third-party agencies or sites should contact the original booking provider for assistance.
Background: Sonder operates short-term, apartment-style rentals and boutique hotels across more than 35 cities and often positions itself at relatively affordable price points. Marriott first announced a partnership with Sonder in 2024. Integration of Sonder properties into Marriott Bonvoy began in early 2025, with full integration expected later in 2025. While the integration was live, guests who added their Marriott Bonvoy number to Sonder reservations could earn Bonvoy points, bonus points and elite night credits.
Practical guidance:
– If you have an upcoming stay that was booked through Marriott channels, watch for messages from Marriott and contact Marriott customer service if you need help confirming or changing your plans.
– If you booked a Sonder property through a third-party travel agency or website, contact that agency or website for rebooking options or refunds.
– If you recently stayed at a Sonder property booked through Marriott and earned Bonvoy points or elite credits, those posted credits may still appear in your account. For example, The Points Guy reported a seven-night stay that posted 15,316 points and seven elite night credits.
Marriott and Sonder have not disclosed further public details about the cause of the default. Marriott has been contacted for additional information; updates will be provided as more becomes available.
