Marriott announced on Nov. 9 that it has terminated its licensing agreement with Sonder, the company that operates apartment-style rentals and boutique hotels. Marriott says the agreement “is no longer in effect due to Sonder’s default,” meaning Sonder properties are no longer Marriott-affiliated and cannot be booked through Marriott channels. As a result, Marriott Bonvoy members can no longer redeem Bonvoy points at Sonder properties.
Marriott said it is prioritizing support for guests currently staying at Sonder properties and for those who booked Sonder stays through Marriott channels. The company will contact guests who booked via marriott.com, the Marriott Bonvoy app or Marriott’s reservation centers to address reservations and booking needs. Guests who booked through third-party agencies should contact their booking provider directly.
Background: Sonder operates short-term, apartment-style rentals and boutique hotels in more than 35 cities, often at affordable price points. Marriott announced a partnership with Sonder in 2024; Sonder properties began integrating with Marriott Bonvoy in early 2025, with full integration expected later in 2025. When the integration was live, guests who added their Marriott Bonvoy number to Sonder reservations could earn Bonvoy points, bonus points and elite night credits.
Practical notes:
– If you have an upcoming stay booked through Marriott channels, watch for communications from Marriott and contact Marriott customer service if you have questions.
– If you booked a Sonder stay through a third-party travel agency or site, contact the agency or site for assistance and rebooking options.
– If you recently stayed at a Sonder booked through Marriott and earned points or elite credits, those posted credits may still appear in your Bonvoy account; TPG reported a recent seven-night stay that posted 15,316 points and seven elite night credits.
Marriott and Sonder have not provided further public details about the cause of the default. Marriott has been contacted for additional information and updates will follow as more is known.
