Why transferable points matter
Transferable points and miles give you flexibility to move rewards into airline and hotel loyalty programs where you can extract the most value. Rather than being limited to a single issuer’s travel portal, you can check award availability and pricing across partner programs and transfer only when it delivers better value. If a partner devalues its award chart, you can redirect future transfers to other partners.
Key transfer basics
– Transfer times vary by issuer and partner; many are instant but some take hours or days. Check transfer-time guidance for American Express, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo before initiating a move.
– Avios points are fungible across several programs: Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Finnair Plus, Iberia Plus and Qatar Airways Privilege Club move at a 1:1 ratio in both directions.
– Issuers and partners occasionally run transfer bonuses that increase the number of miles or points you receive — watch for promotions.
– Marriott Bonvoy typically converts to most airlines at a 3:1 ratio and awards a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred (some partners are exceptions, including American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles and Delta SkyMiles). United MileagePlus has at times offered a 10,000-mile bonus on 60,000-point Bonvoy transfers.
Major transferable currencies and how to earn them
American Express Membership Rewards
AMEX Membership Rewards is one of the most flexible currencies, with a broad set of airline and hotel partners. Popular cards that earn Membership Rewards include:
– The Platinum Card® from American Express
– The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
– American Express® Gold Card
– American Express® Business Gold Card
You can also earn Membership Rewards through select shopping partners (for example, Rakuten) if you opt to receive points instead of cash back.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Chase Ultimate Rewards are highly prized for strong transfer partners and the ability to pool points. Cards that earn fully transferable Ultimate Rewards include:
– Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
– Chase Sapphire Reserve®
– Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
Holders of these cards can combine points from eligible Chase cash-back cards (such as Chase Freedom Flex® or Freedom Unlimited®) into an Ultimate Rewards account, converting cash-back earnings into transferable points.
Capital One Miles
Capital One’s transferable miles can be earned on cards such as:
– Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
– Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
– Capital One Venture X Business
– Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card
– Capital One Spark Miles for Business
Capital One transfers to a wide variety of airline and hotel partners and frequently features transfer bonuses.
Citi ThankYou Rewards
Citi ThankYou Rewards supports many airline and hotel partners. Transfer ratios depend on which Citi product you hold:
– Points on certain premium Citi cards (examples: Citi Prestige, Citi Strata Elite, Citi Strata Premier) often transfer 1:1 to partners.
– On some Citi cards (Citi Custom Cash®, Citi Double Cash®, Citi Strata®), transfers may post at a reduced ratio (for example, 1:0.7) unless you move points into an account linked to an eligible premium Citi product.
Bilt Rewards
Bilt Rewards are earned with the Bilt Mastercard®, notable because you can earn points on rent payments (subject to a calendar-year cap) as well as bonus rates on travel and dining. To earn points, cardmembers must complete at least five transactions per statement period. The Bilt card has no annual fee and transfers to several airline and hotel partners.
Wells Fargo Rewards
Wells Fargo offers transferable Wells Fargo Rewards points on select cards; offerings can change, so check current products and partners. Examples have included the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card and the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card.
Hotel transfer partners
Many transferable currencies also move to hotel loyalty programs. Transfers to hotel programs are often immediate but timing varies by issuer and partner. Hotel-to-airline and hotel top-ups can be especially helpful when you need a small number of miles or points to reach an award threshold.
Practical tips for maximizing transfers
– Don’t transfer until you’re ready to book. Transfers are usually irreversible and moving points without a confirmed award can waste value.
– Check award space across partners first. The partner requiring fewer miles or offering better availability is often the best route.
– Learn transfer ratios and minimums; some partners convert in odd increments or have minimum transfer amounts.
– Watch for transfer bonuses. A temporary 20–40% bonus when moving points to an airline can significantly increase value.
– Link and verify frequent‑flyer and hotel accounts ahead of time. Mismatched names, incomplete profiles or unverified accounts can delay or block transfers.
– Consolidate points strategically. If you have multiple cards within the same issuer family, pooling can make larger transfers or award redemptions possible.
When transfers don’t make sense
– Avoid transferring speculatively. If you can’t confirm award space, keep points in the transferable currency until you can complete the booking.
– Be cautious with partners that frequently devalue awards or have poor availability on routes you fly. Moving points into such programs can lock you into lower long-term value.
Bottom line
Transferable credit card points and miles offer far more flexibility than fixed issuer travel currencies for many travelers. By learning the strengths and partners of major transferable currencies — American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Bilt and Wells Fargo — and by timing transfers for bonuses or partner sweet spots, you can maximize the value of your rewards.
